Standard loan books have always been subject to recall if required by another reader – although this previously required Library staff to intervene on the reader’s behalf – and the borrower was only ever guaranteed the book for 7 days. The introduction of the new system in Summer 2016 brought many features which have been welcomed by students – notably the automatic renewal of standard loan items which are not in demand, and a fairer fines structure (i.e. only overdue books which are required by others attract fines). However, a corollary of this is that all requests for an item on loan automatically generate a recall, and this cannot be manipulated to allow for exceptions.
We will evaluate the success of the new system after a full year of operation.
